Emergencies: what to do when your child knocks a tooth

A fall at the playground, a ball in the face, strong pain at night. What to do in the first minutes – and when to call us right away.

First of all: call

In every emergency the first step is a phone call to 694 478 3636. We tell you what to do at that moment and see you as a priority – usually the same day. Children with pain or an injury don’t wait.

Nancy’s tip

Calm yourself first. Your child reads your face: if you are calm, so will they be.

A whole tooth came out

Here every minute counts – but only for permanent teeth.

  • Permanent tooth: hold it by the crown (not the root), rinse gently with milk or saline, don’t scrub it. If you can, put it back in its socket and have the child bite on gauze. Otherwise put it in milk and come at once – ideally within 30–60 minutes.
  • Baby tooth: we do NOT put it back – it would harm the permanent tooth developing underneath. Keep it, press with gauze for the bleeding and call us.

Broken or cracked tooth

  • Rinse the mouth with lukewarm water
  • A cold compress on the outside for swelling
  • If you find the fragment, keep it in milk – it can often be bonded back
  • Call us the same day, even if it doesn’t hurt: a cracked tooth without pain can “die” silently

A tooth that is loose or pushed in after a knock

A knock can push the tooth into the gum or loosen it. Don’t try to straighten it. Soft food, no pressure, and a visit within 24 hours. In the following weeks we watch for a colour change – a sign it needs care.

Toothache or swelling

  • Rinse with lukewarm salt water
  • Children’s paracetamol or ibuprofen at the dose for their age – never aspirin on the tooth or gums
  • Don’t put a hot compress on swelling
  • Swelling of the face or fever = call immediately, it is likely an abscess
Nancy’s tip

Pain that wakes the child at night is not “it will pass”. It is a sign the tooth’s nerve is affected. Appointment the next day.

How we prevent injuries

  • A mouthguard for football, basketball, martial arts, cycling – we make it at the clinic to your child’s measurements
  • A helmet on the bike and the scooter
  • Children with protruding front teeth get injured more often – an early orthodontic check helps
